The Latvian Literature platform is announcing an OPEN CALL for translators, offering an opportunity to receive a grant for translating Latvian literature.

The aim of the Grant programme for Translation of Literary works of Latvian Authors is to support the translation of Latvian prose, poetry, drama and children's literature of high merit into various foreign languages by allocating funding to translators for translating Latvian literary texts (and literary editors of the translated works), including literary classics, into different languages, thus promoting Latvian literature abroad, and to ensure the commitment of foreign publishers to publish translations of Latvian literature.

In order to ensure high quality of the translations of Latvian literature in other languages and take into consideration the merits of the original work in selecting literary works for the Programme, priority will be given to the following:

- A complete translation of an entire work that has been commissioned by a foreign publisher for potential publishing of the work;

- The book to be translated has been suggested by a publisher or a translator, providing arguments for possible market potential and interest from foreign publishers, as well as suggesting a concrete plan for publishing the work abroad.

- A work nominated for the Annual Latvian Literary Award (since 2010 – LALIGABA), significant literary competitions, or received any other literary awards.

The deadline for applications is April 29th, 2019 (23:59 East European time). Only online submissions are accepted. Please submit your project applications HERE.

NB! Application documents should contain Letter of Intent or Agreement with a foreign publisher, attesting the interest of the publisher to publish the translation!

The submitted projects will be evaluated by a of experts. The projects receiving financial support will be announced after May 15th, 2019.
